Service Dog Project
ICAN trains and places assistance dogs with individuals with disabilities and provides foundational life skills to inmates through their experience as trainers. ICAN is the only ACCREDITED service dog training program based in Indiana.
ICAN brings together three diverse groups to empower people to live more enriched and independent lives:
- Children and adults living with disabilities
- Carefully screened incarcerated adults
- The compassionate canine
Intense training, veterinary care, quality nutrition, outreach/follow up activities, equipment and supplies required to train currently costs ICAN at least $25,000 per dog. Clients are charged $2,500 for his/her service dog and for the follow-up service during the lifetime (8-10 years) of the partnership. ICAN trains dogs in a variety of skills: diabetic alert dogs, mobility assistance, PTSD for veterans, in-home skilled companions, autism and facility dogs for rehab, schools and court systems.
